Supporting our staff’s health and wellbeing

The continued dedication and commitment of our staff make Kingston Hospital what it is today, which is why their health and wellbeing remains a key focus, alongside a number of patient-facing projects.

Rest areas and meeting spaces continue to be something our staff are prioritising, which is why we developed a new outdoor recreational space, that opened in October 2022, on land adjacent to the Wolverton Centre. A new communal space in the Surgical Centre, next to the canteen, is also being created for staff to relax, rest and refuel, during and after shifts. We also continue to support the hospital’s health and wellbeing programme in a number of ways including specialist health clinics and exercise classes.

bicycle shed

We are currently working with our hospital’s Bicycle Users Group (BUG) to provide a second storage and maintenance hub, after we opened our first in August 2021. Located by the Esher Wing car park, this hub provides space for 78 bicycles to be securely stored undercover and has proved very popular with staff.

There is a continued drive to encourage all staff who live locally to cycle to work if they can as it’s cost effective, reduces carbon production and road congestion, and helps keep us healthy. To do so, colleagues need to be assured that their bike is securely stored while they are at work. Bike theft continues to be a frustrating and persistent problem for staff around the site and installing CCTV, electronic access and security lights for each of our small bike racks is neither possible nor cost effective (as shown by recent surveys). Consequently, a second storage and maintenance hub is needed to provide a safe and secure place for hospital staff to store their bike whilst working. The optimal location for this second storage unit is still being determined and we are grateful to all who have helped raise £12,000 to date towards our £35,000 fundraising target.
