The amazing support the hospital has received locally and through the national NHS Charities Together campaign has allowed us to create a large communal area for staff that is adjacent to the canteen, while upgrading existing rest areas with new furniture and electrical appliances. These areas are essential to staff, providing a space for them to relax, refuel and rest before, during and after shifts.
Some of these rest areas have been repurposed for sleep and are being fitted out with recliner chairs and z-beds. We have also been able to install additional showers in the hospital’s Esher Wing to enable staff to wash before or after their shifts.
The atrium garden in the hospital’s Kingston Surgical Centre which provides an outdoor rest area is to also benefit from new furniture and replanting.
Many staff are having to spend longer periods of time at the hospital with revised shift patterns, so having access to rest areas has become even more important. The investment in developing and enhancing the staff areas has been well received, providing brighter and more functional staff areas which help to support their wellbeing at this particularly challenging time.
