Kingston Hospital’s staff stepped up to sepsis, joining a national challenge inspired by the UK Sepsis Trust to raise awareness and drive timely action in recognising and treating this life-threatening condition. The campaign was proudly funded by Kingston Hospital Charity, whose support helped bring the initiative to life across the Trust.
Departments created eye-catching information boards showcasing how they identify and manage sepsis in their areas. These displays, judged on creativity, clarity, and content, sparked valuable discussion about early detection and timely intervention.
Promotional stands outside the canteen and walkarounds throughout the hospital kept the conversation going. Staff joined in with a lively quiz, picked up awareness materials, and engaged in practical conversations about recognising symptoms and prompt antibiotic administration.
The campaign culminated in a Step Up to Sepsis Symposium on 9 September. The CEO of the UK Sepsis Trust opened the event with a video message, followed by powerful talks from clinicians sharing first-hand experiences of treating sepsis, and how subtle signs can easily be missed. Sessions also explored emerging diagnostic innovations and key updates on antimicrobial resistance and sustainability from our Microbiology and Infection Control teams. Awards for the best sepsis information boards were presented by our new Chief Nurse, Graeme Wright.
The campaign’s message is simple but vital: stop and think, could it be sepsis?
With the support of Kingston Hospital Charity, initiatives like this help keep sepsis awareness front of mind and drive the culture change needed to save lives.
Spot sepsis. Stop sepsis. Step up to sepsis.
