120 runners took part in The Pub Run Club’s first Kingston Santa Run on the evening of Thursday 12 December. Decked out in their Santa suits, participants had the option to run or walk the 5 km route which started and finished at The Grove pub in Surbiton.
Those taking part were divided into three groups to accommodate all levels of fitness, as The Pub Run Club’s motto is ‘Have fun. Get Fit. Be Social!’ Christmas music, lights and glow sticks ensured a lively and fun atmosphere along the route. On bringing this ethos into the festive run, co-founder Chris Ford said:
“The ‘having fun’ group is going to be a little bit slower, the ‘getting fit’ group is a lot faster, while the ‘being social’ group would take the 5km at a walking pace.”
The event was sponsored by Thames Ditton BYD of Berry Group, and commercial window cleaners Aquamark Cleaning.
Over £3,000 was raised by those taking part. Half of the monies raised are to be used to upgrade the play area for the children who visit Kingston Hospital’s ear, nose and throat service in its Aspen Building. The other half is supporting the Macmillan Information and Support service, which is based in the hospital’s adult cancer building, the Sir William Rous Unit.
Fundraising Manager, Rupert Meredith-Jones, said:
“We were delighted to be involved in this inaugural festive fundraiser. Despite the weather, there was a great atmosphere and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Christmas hats-off to The Pub Run Club’s founders’ Chris Ford and Carl Barthram for putting on a fun and inclusive event. We are very grateful to all who took on the 5 km route, The Grove pub and the volunteers, helping to raise over £3,000. Hopefully, the Kingston Santa Run will return in 2025.”
